The basketball calendar of January can be divided for Cherkaser fans on the match with “Dnipro” and with other rivals. The third opposing didn’t discern one from two previous: again rivalry, again fight, again many mistakes as by players and by referees. The difference from the previous match was the smaller quantity of Dnipropetrover fans, instead of 500 persons as on the match of Euro Cup Challenge, only 100.
The start was not bright. The basis of “Dnipro” (Panchenko, Koval, Ivanov, Lideka and Zavackas) built successfully defense and conquered the zone defense of Cherkaser. Three times during two minutes of the playing time Donatas Zavackas demonstrated the disadvantages of the “zone” from the 6-meters distance. Long-ranging of one from the players has not good impact on the score and wasn’t pleasant for “Mavpy” – 13:21. Andriy Podkovyrov reacted at once and instead of Dickens appeared Umbrasko. The zone pressing and answer from “bracket” Zavackas from Kazlauskas and Lebediev gave opportunity for “Mavpy” to organize the difference 16:1 and to end the first effective 10-minutes as winner – 29:23.
In the middle of the second period Kazlauskas got second technical foul and the rest of the match he watched the game from the tribune of the sport hall.
With the start of the third period Lebediev put his two three-pointers. Podkovyrov counted in these minutes on experienced players and it gave its results. For example Umbrasko helped the team with everything: kicked three-pointer and checked the construction with “dunks”. Juris became the most effective player of Cherkaser team став – 19 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Such effective play of Latvian and small advantage thanks to rebounds help them to get to such difference 86:69. Three minutes before the match, Dnipropetrover managed to decrease this handy-cup – 93:87.
Andriy Podkovyrov: This game with “Dnipro” was again nervous, and there were enough mistakes. That’s why we couldn’t fix our advantage till the end of the game. I think, if we play against another team, we’ll do it, but today we played all the time with the thoughts about defense. I’m satisfied with the actions of players; they fought today for every ball. Before the games against “Khimik” and “Azovmash” this victory must help us moral.
Arnas Kazlauskas (about technical fouls): I didn’t understand what happened. It was the fight, and I want to stretch out my arm, which was in the embrace of Markov. Referee estimated it as technical foul. Unfortunately I couldn’t help the team then.
Georgiy Stupenchuk (head coach of “Dnipro”): «Today’s match was like two previous. But this time we didn’t win a victory. We lost the game because of rebounds, which were important. But I’m satisfied with the game and can’t reproach them».
