Edmunds Valeiko: “I didn’t have doubts when I got the chance to return to Ukraine”

The beginning of the winter period brings the team “Cherkaski Mavpy” positive and negative moments. Positive is getting permit to the quarter final games of Euro Cup Challenge. Concerning negative side can be distinguished some individual problems. Two players – Jarutis and Lokhmanchuk because of different reasons will not play for the team during half year.
It was not easy to find the necessary small forward for the team. Edmunds Valeiko couldn’t find himself in the pollen team “Polpac”, but he accepted with pleasure the suggestion of Ukrainian team. During three years Valeiko played for Kyjiver team “Kyjiv”. 34-aged Latvian player played also against the coach of cherkaser Andriy Podkovyrov (he was in the complement of Kyjiver “Budivelnik”) in the game against Latvian team “ASK”.
Edmunds, was it easy to come back to Ukraine?
I got this suggestion at once. I have very pleasant memoirs after years spent in BK “Kyjiv”. I like everything in this country – life, people, and what’s the most important the decent level of basketball. The championship of Ukraine progresses constantly. I didn’t’t have doubts, when I got the chance to return to Ukraine.
Did you have other suggestions from the clubs?
Yes, and I had a lot of them. But the championship of Ukraine is native for me. And as for new player in the team it’s important to get used to the team very fast.
You signed the agreement with Cherkaser club only for one month because of the trauma of Rolandas Jarutis. How do you think can you stay for longer period in Cherkaser?
It depends only on me. I will make efforts to stay in “Cherkaski Mavpy”. But the last word says the guidance of the club.
The guidance of the club put high tasks for the team. How do you think is it possible to make it real for our players?
I understood from the first day that the guidance comes up very seriously to trainings and to the games of the whole championship. Therefore it’s real, because we have on of the best complement of the team in super league. Of course, it’s impossible to win everything. And the fans must understand it; they support the team very seriously during the game with “Pulsar”. In the national championship we have strong opponents, the main from which is “Azovmash”. “Khimik” shows also very profound basketball.
Concerning your debut playing in the complement of “Cherkaski Mavpy” (game on Sunday against “Pulsar”), you showed good statistic result – 10 effective assists. How do you appreciate your actions in that game?
It’s hard to play on high level, because till that time I had very hard pollen stage. Didn’t understand till now, what was the reason to invite me to that pollen club, because I had very few playing time. Concerning the quantity of assists it’s my work. I feel myself better when I give assists than I score goals.
Tomorrow your team will play not easy match in Mykolajiv, where the team of Valentin Berestnjev can show good game every rival.
Yes, as I remember it was always hard to play in Mykolajiv in spite of that who comes – the last of the first team of the Championship. We go there only for victory.
